Enterprise and Support Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position: Enterprise & Support Manager
Hours: 30 hours per week (including occasional Sundays)
Pay rate: NSCF Enterprise Agreement Manager Level, $30.00 per hour plus entitlements, which include superannuation, annual leave, personal leave, and training allowance.
Contract: Permanent part time
Responsible to: Management Committee

Person
The Enterprise & Support Manager will have a strong history of managing staff and volunteers. The person will need a working knowledge of human resource management, promotions and public relations, and possess high level communication skills to interact effectively with people both internal and external to the organisation. This is an opportunity to use your skills, networks and experience to help us develop the Farm through growing new and existing social enterprises at the Farm, which align with our vision and goals and provide sources of revenue.

Organisation
Established in 1994, Northey Street City Farm (NSCF) is a non-profit community organisation for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn the principles of Permaculture through hands-on experience. Join an enthusiastic, passionate group of people to work on one of Australia’s largest city farms – a Permaculture site on 2 Ha with established kitchen and market gardens, orchards, and woodlot, plus a nursery and Brisbane’s only Organic Farmers’ Market. NSCF is also a community hub that facilitates the development of social connections and new skills for volunteers and participants in a variety of programs.

Role
The Enterprise Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the development of the Farm’s enterprises and events while ensuring consistency with core NSCF Values and encouraging community support. The manager is also responsible for providing support services to the whole Farm, including fundraising and finance, administration, promotions, human resource management and external communications. The Enterprise and Support team currently includes the Markets Co-ordinator, Nursery Co-ordinator, Promotions and Administration Co-ordinator, Finance Co-ordinator and Events Coordinator, as well as Nursery Assistants, casual staff and volunteers.

The position is for 30 hrs/week, which must include Thursdays. Occasional weekend work is required (penalty rates paid). Timing of working hours can be flexible depending on Farm requirements.

Responsibilities
• Manage staff and volunteers within the Enterprise and Support Team, including developing annual work plans and setting performance targets.
• Develop new and existing sources of income for the Farm, including from enterprises, site hire, partnerships, grants, and donations.
• Develop and coordinate the program of events and activities at the Farm and ensure that appropriate systems are in place for recording, monitoring, and evaluating them.
• Develop and coordinate communication, reporting, promotional and marketing strategies
• Coordinate staff recruitment, induction, orientation, and performance review processes for the whole Farm.
• Prepare and manage budgets and be accountable for NSCF financial systems.
• Assist the Management Committee in the development, enactment and review of key policy and planning documents to guide activities on the Farm through an appropriate consultation process.
• Meet with the other manager (Education and Farming) twice-monthly to ensure harmonious co-management of whole-of-farm issues.
• Report monthly, and be answerable, to the Management Committee, and participate in monthly Whole of Farm meetings.

Selection Criteria

Essential
• Management skills and experience, preferably in a social enterprise or small business, including planning, budgeting, financial management, team building, staff coordination, volunteer supervision, meeting facilitation and conflict resolution.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising and income generation in the not-for-profit or small business sectors.
• Experience in marketing and promotions, including social media.
• Willingness to have a criminal background check.

Desirable
• Hold a Permaculture Design Course (PDC) or willingness to acquire one.
• Experience of working, or volunteering, in community or not for profit organisations.
• Knowledge of, and experience in, Permaculture or Horticulture.
• Experience in organising fund-raising activities and events.
• First Aid certificate or willingness to acquire one.

Role

The Education and Farming team staff currently includes the Site Coordinator, the Adult Education Coordinator and the Youth Education Coordinator, as well as casual employees, contractors, volunteers and work experience participants.

Position: Events Coordinator 

Award: Northey Street City Farm (NSCF) Staff Agreement 

Hours: 4 hours per week. Extra hours will be available close to the major events. (The applicant might be required to work some weekends) 

Pay rate: NSCF Enterprise Agreement Level 3, $26.89/hr, and entitlements as defined in the NSCF Enterprise Agreement 

Contract Position: Project Part-time (to 30 June 2023) 

Responsible to: Enterprise Team Manager 

Working Environment

Northey Street City Farm is a non-profit community farm in the inner-city suburb of Windsor. It has been developed for people to enjoy, and participate in, using the principles of Permaculture. It is also intended to be a demonstration site where people of all ages can learn through practical, hands-on experience.

Purpose of Position

The Events Coordinator will be responsible for designing, coordinating and delivering events at the Farm including the Summer and Winter Solstice events. The role will be responsible for all aspects of the events from programme design, logistics and sourcing of workshop presenters, bands and stallholders. The person in the role will be expected to undertake all facets of event management, under the support and guidance of the Enterprise & Events Manager and Events reference group when necessary. Key aspects of the role will be alignment to the organisation’s belief, vision, values and purpose; organisation skills; budget control, and relationship management.

Person

The Events Coordinator should have excellent communication and people management skills, with a sound understanding of events management and a demonstrated ability to manage and market a successful event.  The Events Coordinator should have a passion for event and festival coordination. This role will be responsible for supervising volunteers to assist with the event. The successful candidate will ideally be reliable, an enthusiastic self-starter who is willing to work with our community to meet the financial, social and environmental objectives of the Farm. This person will have initiative and be open to sharing their practical skills and experiences with a broad range of people.

Responsibilities

In consultation with the Enterprise Manager, develop and implement an event project management plan for each major event. This plan to include: 

  • Marketing 
  • Site, infrastructure & logistics 
  • Education activities & presentations 
  • Council and other permits 
  • Entertainment, parade & bonfire 
  • Event bookings 
  • Risks 
  • Work within the planned budget 
  • Manage all event stakeholders appropriately 
  • Report as required, at a minimum monthly, to the Enterprise Team Manager 
  • Supervise volunteers  
  • Ensure that all documents, processes and procedures are uploaded and maintained online to ensure continuity of events 

Selection Criteria (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Essential 

  • Demonstrated experience in events management and marketing. 
  • Excellent communication and writing skills. 
  • Problem solving skills related to events management. 
  • Supervisory and leadership skills.  
  • Computer skills, especially event management and online document management software. 

 Desirable 

  • Events management or project management qualifications and/or experience 
  • Marketing qualifications and/or experience 
  • Experience in working in community-based organisations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position:                         Youth Educator

Employment:                Casual, as per NSCF Staff Agreement, Level 2

Day & Hours:                As required, including occasional weekends.

Pay rate:                          $29.99 per hour, with penalty rates paid on weekends

Contract Position:      Casual

Responsible to:             Youth Education Co-ordinator

Responsibilities

  • Deliver activities to visiting groups on site at NSCF, and occasionally at other sites.

General Tasks

  • Liaise with the Youth Education Co-ordinator about the content and activities for each session.
  • Set up and pack up any equipment required for the activity or program.
  • Deliver activities and tours for school and other groups, and other educational programs (eg. Earth Kids).
  • Deliver offsite educational activities.
  • Be aware of potential safety issues and follow the relevant parts of the NSCF Youth Risk Management Plan, model safe behaviour and report any incidents to the Youth Education Coordinator.
  • Undertake program evaluation and planning sessions as required.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Familiarity with, or willingness to become familiar with the Northey Street City Farm site and activities that are held on it.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of permaculture / sustainable agricultural practices and/or sustainability.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to relate well within a diverse community.
  • A current Queensland “Blue Card” (Working with Children Check) or have a willingness to obtain one.

Desirable

  • Experience in teaching or working with young people.
  • Experience working in community/not-for-profit organisations.
  • Possess a Permaculture Design Certificate.

Person

The Nursery Coordinator will be responsible for operating the City Farm Nursery making it a profitable enterprise that provides a service to the community through providing useful plants and other permaculture resources. The Nursery Coordinator should have experience in a retail nursery and a passion for customer service, preferably with a practical working knowledge of Permaculture plants and their uses. This role will be responsible for supervising and developing volunteers to assist with the nursery retail and production. The person will ideally be reliable, passionate about plants and customers, an enthusiastic self-starter who is willing to work with our community to meet the financial, social and environmental objectives of the nursery. They will have initiative and be open to sharing their practical skills and experiences with a broad range of people.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the ordering, sales and stocktaking of all retail lines ensuring that stock is always available for sales.
  • Maintain a Point of Sale & inventory management system for the retail operations.
  • Maintain a welcoming retail space with appropriate visual merchandising and to OHS standards.
  • Implement and contribute to the development of a marketing plan for the nursery.
  • Build a loyal customer base, providing outstanding customer service.
  • Supervise and develop nursery volunteers, staff and students to meet the operational needs of the nursery.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a knowledge base of processes and procedures for the retail Nursery.
  • Liaise with the Farm & Site Manager to produce plants for retail.
  • Provide the Enterprise Manager with financial and operational reports.
  • Monitor the Nursery budget ensuring the financial goals remain on track.
  • Maintain any agreed certifications as directed by the Enterprise Manager.
  • Ensure Nursery resources and equipment are maintained and in good working order.
  • Actively participate in relevant meetings.
  • Work co-operatively with the Enterprise Manager, other enterprises and teams at the Farm.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Selection Criteria)

Essential

  • Qualifications and training in horticulture.
  • Demonstrated experience in retail nursery operations.
  • A working knowledge of plants and other elements used in permaculture design including their requirements and uses.
  • Experience in customer service, cash handling, stock control and other administrative tasks required in a retail setting.

Timing of working hours can be flexible according to season and farm requirements.  This position may be physically demanding at times and requires a person who is fit, energetic, and flexible.

Responsibilities

    • Ensure that the Farm site is managed according to Permaculture and organic principles.
    • Manage Farming Team staff.
    • Coordinate the recruitment and training of volunteers and work experience participants for the Farming Team.
    • Contribute to the planning and management of building and infrastructure construction projects as required
    • Coordinate the development and management of farming enterprises, including the Market Garden and the allotments
    • Organise and facilitate Farming Team meetings.
    • Participate in monthly Whole Farm meetings.
    • Report monthly, and be answerable, to the Management Committee, and attend every third Management Committee meeting.
    • Prepare and manage budgets and be accountable for any team related cash handling systems.

Hours:   20 hours per week ( working days to be negotiated)

Pay rate:                            NSCF Award Agreement Level 3, $26.10 /hr, plus entitlements

Contract Position:       Temporary part time (Approx. 1 year contract)

Responsible to:              Farming Manager

Organisation

Established in 1994, Northey Street City Farm (NSCF) is a non-profit community organisation for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn the principles of Permaculture through hands-on experience. Join an enthusiastic, passionate group of people to work on one of Australia’s largest city farms; a Permaculture site, established kitchen and market gardens, City Farm Nursery as well as orchards and woodlot, plus Brisbane’s only Organic Farmers Market. NSCF is also a community hub that facilitates the development of social connections and new skills for volunteers and participants in a variety of programs.

Role

  • Work with the Farming Team Manager to coordinate development of the market garden and micro-greens production into commercially productive enterprises.
  • Assist with other Farm based enterprises and activities as required.
  • Carry out infrastructure maintenance, including standing in for the Site Co-ordinator as required

Responsibilities

  • Work with Farming Manager to develop and implement a market garden plan.
  • Coordinate maintenance of the market garden in accordance with the market garden plan and the Soil Contamination Operational Plan.
  • Train and supervise volunteers and Work Experience participants in the market garden.
  • Document inputs and outputs from the market garden enterprise
  • Organise the harvest of and selling of produce through the NSCF City Farm Nursery and the proposed farm gate stall.
  • Eventual coordination of delivery of farm produce to local businesses (dependent upon NSCF acquiring a farm ute).
  • Develop and maintain systems for the efficient harvesting and use of rainwater in the market garden area.
  • Program and repair automated irrigation systems, as required.
  • Maintain gardening tools.
  • Work with the Site Co-ordinator to ensure the health and safety of people working in the market garden and other farming activities.
  • Provide First Aid as required. Complete incident reports and record materials used from First Aid kits.
  • Report fortnightly to Farming Team Manager
  • Participate in monthly meetings.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • At least 3 years’ experience in organic gardening and or farming.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining equipment and infrastructure associated with gardening / farming (e.g. irrigation systems).
  • People management skills including demonstrated volunteer coordination experience.
  • Experience working in community / volunteer organisations.
  • Ability to work within an interdependent team structure.
  • Construction white/blue card or willingness to acquire one.
  • First Aid certificate or willingness to acquire one.
  • Willingness to have a criminal background check.
  • Current Driver’s Licence

Desirable

  • Permaculture design and implementation experience
  • WH&S experience

Role

  • Working under the direction of the Farm & Site Team Manager, the Site Coordinator assists in the maintenance of the farm site, manages waste and performs routine cleaning
  • The Site Coordinator’s role is critical to the health, safety and security of all farm users.
  • Work 24 hours per week, which must include Wednesdays Timing of working hours can be flexible according to individual and farm needs, such as events and emergencies (e.g. flood)

Responsibilities

  • Day-to-day management of the farm site to ensure the safety and security of all farm users, and to enhance the farm’s appearance.
  • Coordinate all onsite waste management and cleaning of the kitchen and toilets
  • Supervise volunteers, community service, work for the dole and other program participants in the completion of site tasks
  • Organisation and maintenance of the tool shed, including repair and maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Contribute technical expertise and support to other teams as needed
  • Assist the Farm & Site Team Manager in planning and development of the farm site and the management of irregular site users, including the homeless
  • Actively participate in meetings
  • Assist with site hire and event preparation duties, as required

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Skills and experience in construction, site management and WH&S practices
  • Demonstrated experience of maintaining buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work alone and within an interdependent team structure
  • Commitment to working with people from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Willingness to have a criminal background check
  • Hold a current first aid certificate or be willing to acquire one
  • Hold a current Construction White Card, or willingness to acquire one
  • Hold a current Blue Card, or willingness to acquire one

Purpose of Position

The Events Coordinator will be responsible for designing, coordinating and delivering events at the Farm including the Summer and Winter Solstice and Spring and Autumn Equinox Events. The role will be responsible for all aspects of the events from programme design, logistics and sourcing of workshop presenters, bands and stallholders. The person in the role will be expected to undertake all facets of event management, under the support and guidance of the EE Team, EE Manager and Events reference group when necessary. Key aspects of the role will be alignment to the organisation’s belief, vision, values and purpose; organisation skills; budget and relationship management.

Person

The Events Coordinator should be an enterprising individual with excellent communication and people management skills, with a sound understanding of events management and a demonstrated ability to manage and market a successful event.

The Events Coordinator should have a passion for event and festival coordination, preferably with a practical working knowledge of events and event coordination. This role will be responsible for supervising volunteers to assist with the event.     • Education activities & presentations
    • Council and other permits
    • Entertainment, parade & bonfire
    • Event bookings
    • Risks
  • Work within the planned budget
  • Manage all event stakeholders appropriately
  • Report monthly on the financials and project status to the Enterprise Team Manager
  • Supervise volunteers
  • Ensure that all documents, processes and procedures are uploaded and maintained online to ensure continuity of events

Selection Criteria (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

 Essential

  • Demonstrated experience in events management and marketing.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Problem solving skills related to events management.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Computer skills, especially event management and online document management software.

Desirable

  • Events management or project management qualifications and/or experience
  • Marketing qualifications and/or experience
  • Experience in working in community-based organisations.

Physical Demands

This position may be physically demanding at times and requires a person who is fit, energetic, and flexible.
