WoodKraft at Northey Street Sunday Organic Farmers Market

During Plastic Free July we would like to celebrate one of our stall holders, who is committed to hand crafting beautiful traditional wooden toys for children.

John Krohn is a wonderful artist who makes traditional handmade wooden toys and some home ware and he sells these at various markets, including the Northey Street Sunday Organic Farmers Market.

“My beautiful handmade wooden toys are good and safe for children to play with because they are made from natural timber with no paint, no oil, no lacquer, no stain or varnish”, says John Krohn.

John says he likes being a part of our friendly market and really appreciates when people acknowledge how well his toys are made and when they say they love them and purchase one.

The Woodkraft toys and home ware are produced with the greatest of care. John’s professional background is in wood machining and he uses many exotic species of timber offcuts, such as Rosewood, Kwila, American Rock Maple, and Cedar, just to mention a few. Being very conscious of the environment, John puts the safety and health of children as priority as they play with these beautiful hand crafted toys.

“None of my toys are stained or varnished. All are natural timber and I avoid using nails and or screws where possible. My main reward is to see children playing with the toys and for them to get many years of enjoyment. I am always ready to listen to new ideas and welcome special custom orders”, says John.

So if you have a child that you want to purchase a gift for, why not make it a special gift from an artist with a huge heart and magnificent talent. Custom Orders mean you can get something crafted that is one of a kind! Although everything John makes is one of a kind.

Get to the markets this Sunday and check out his stall and his wonderful work and make a purchase, so that he can continue to see many children playing with his lovely toys.

John has a heart of gold and he also volunteers at the Prince Charles Hospital.

Sol Breads Organic Bakery at Northey Street City Farm

Sol Breads Organic Bakery has been providing wholesome breads and pastries at the Northey Street Organic Markets since the beginning days of the markets!

Marco is their long standing baker since 1998 when Sol Breads consisted of five people! It wasn’t too many years after when Kate and Paul started a Sol Breads stall at Northey Street Sunday Organic Farmers Market. Kate remembers climbing those back stairs at West End where the bakery was, early, early morning, to collect the bread for the market.

Kate and Paul love selling wholesome certified organic sourdough, artisan bread and pastries. Food grown and made with extra consciousness about the state of our food production align with their personal values and ethics.

Perhaps mum would like an artisan made organic almond croissant with her spiced organic chai this Sunday, or a delicately crafted quiche.

Sol Breads also provide gluten free and wheat free breads, and sour dough bread made with stone-ground flours handcrafted and baked in the slow, time-honoured traditions of a true artisan.

“No chemicals, no additives, no shortcuts. Just amazing bread. Every slice is a nutritious, energy-boosting powerhouse. Naturally fermented to boost your gut health and immunity.” Sol Breads

So come to the markets on Sunday and say hi to Kate and Paul. They are in the Butcher, the Baker and the Candlestick Maker corner – in between Happy Flame Candles and Brisbane Certified Organics (Meat and Small Goods).

1st Lady Health & Beauty

1st Lady Health & Beauty are at the Northey Street Organic Farmers Market every Sunday!

A regular at the Sunday Markets, the friendly team offer Eyebrow Threading, Brow and Lash Tinting, Organic Facials, Henna Designs on any part of the body, and Therapeutic Massage.

Threading is an ancient hair-removal technique, practiced for centuries among the most beautiful women of Asia and the Middle East. It is a great alternative to waxing and tweezing, especially for sensitive skin. Unlike waxing, threading does not remove a layer of skin, which can leave the skin on your face susceptible to sun damage. By far the least invasive method of facial hair removal, this method creates a graceful brow with clean, well-defined edges that frame the eye. At 1st Lady Health & Beauty, Eyebrow threading is only $15! They also offer moustache and chin hair removal through threading.

A Foot Massage enhances lubrication and circulation in your body, and helps draw toxins to the surface for release. Foot massages can help prevent foot and ankle injuries. 1st Lady Health & Beauty say their treatments can also help to lower blood pressure, help reduce the effects of depression, anxiety, headaches and migraines and also assist with flat feet and plantar fasciitis. Foot massages can also reduce the effects of edema (swelling) in pregnant women.

Head Massages can help prevent migraines, headaches and back pain. They can promote hair growth and detoxify the body by stimulating lymphatic drainage. 1st Lady Health & Beauty say their head massages relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression and boost memory capabilities. A 30 minute Foot or Head Massage only costs $45.

1st Lady Health & Beauty also offer tradition Henna design work. The kids love them! Give yourself a henna treatment for a special night out.

The Northey Street Organic Farmers Markets is not only a place to buy your weekly fresh organic produce, but you can also get permaculture plants, a hot organic breakfast, a refreshing green smoothie or iced chai or the best organic coffee in town, ethical gifts and a range of health and beauty services. Pop into 1st Lady Health & Beauty this Sunday and pamper yourself!

Sherwood Rd Organic Meats

Want to ensure your meat is certified organic, 100% grass-fed, fully traceable and free from insecticides/pesticides
/preservatives/antibiotics/growth promotants and other unnecessary nasties? Want reassurance that the animals are treated ethically and humanely? Want excellent quality meat that simply tastes amazing?

The Tillers, owners of Sherwood Rd Organic Meats, produce beautiful tasting beef and lamb on the certified organic grass plains of western Queensland. Their animals are: 100% grass fed & finished; antibiotic-free; chemical-free; hormone-free and growth promotant-free. They are treated humanely and calmly, and our farming practices are environmentally friendly and sustainable. We are certified with Australia’s largest certification body – Australian Certified Organics – the “bud” logo you can trust!

Sherwood Road Organics is one of the meat suppliers at Northey Street Sunday Organic Farmers Markets every week, as well as Kialla Organic Beef, Green Ag Organic Free Range Turkey,  Brisbane Certified Organic, and The Little Seafood Co.

We asked Adrian Tiller from Sherwood Road Organics a few questions.

What is your favorite thing to eat right now?

Always meat and 3 veg for me! This weather it’s lamb chops (followed closely by hogget or goat). In summer, I take after my parents with my love of cold meat & salad. I’m looking forward to our first nitrate-free Ham.

When and how did you make the decision to become a farmer?

We didn’t get much of a choice in my day, my dad wanted the farms to go to the next generation and I was the only son. I made the choice to become an Organic Farmer around 15 years ago when I saw the effects of chemicals on our land and my health.

What’s the most surprising thing about farming?

Nothing much surprises me, but Mother Nature keeps me on my toes! The older I get the more I learn to live with her though…

Why is organic food important?

The obvious health benefits. That and the less chemicals in the world, the better.

Where do you see the future of farming? What do you hope for it?

The trend of using less inputs is steady (not dramatic), I’m sure this will continue.

Sherwood Rd Organics Meats has a reputation for friendly service, knowledge of health many networks including gaps, fodmap, keto, paleo, amines, whole30 to name a few that rely on, ethical animal & farming practices and delicious, fresh meats!
