EDUCATION ACTIVITY TUTOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Education Activity Tutor

Employment: Casual, as per NSCF Staff Agreement, Level2.

Day & Hours: As required, including occasional weekends.

Salary: $28.27 per hour, with penalty rates paid on weekends

Reports to: Youth Education Co-ordinator

Responsibilities

Deliver activities to visiting groups on site at NSCF, and occasionally at other sites.

General Tasks

Liaise with the Education Co-ordinator about the content and activities for each session.
Set up and pack up any equipment required for the activity.

Deliver activities, being guided by the activity worksheets and outlines.
Be aware of potential safety issues on behalf of your group according to the Risk Assessment, model safe behaviour and report any incidents to the Youth Education Coordinator.

Make every effort to motivate, engage and encourage, but be aware that the tour leader/school teacher has the overall responsibility for the students.
Undertake program evaluation and planning sessions as required.

Selection Criteria

Essential

Familiarity with, or willingness to become familiar with the Northey Street City Farm site and activities that are held on it.
Possess a Permaculture Design Certificate.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to relate well within a diverse community.
A current Queensland “Blue Card” (Working with Children Check) or have a willingness to obtain one.

Desirable

Experience in teaching or working with young people.
Experience working in community/not-for-profit organisations.

Summer School Holiday Earth Kids Program

NSCF Earth Kids programs are about supporting kids to become ‘nature smart’ – to have the knowledge, understandings and skills to engage in creating a more sustainable world – in a fun and interactive way.

It is an experiential program of outdoor discovery, in which kids will learn about the animals and plants at the Farm through observation and supported questioning; explore Indigenous knowledge; experiment with Earth Arts and bushcraft skills; and put permaculture into practice.

Each program differs according to the seasons and to include a diversity of activities. Some of the activities will be:

Gardening – planting, harvesting, composting, bush tucker and learning about seasonal changes;
Bushcraft – building shelters, making string, making fires;
Earth Arts – creativity using natural materials;
Indigenous understanding – storytelling, cultural sharing;
Earth connection – daily ‘sit spots’, mapping, wandering and other activities to support understanding of the web of life and the elements that all life is made of.

School Holiday Programs: The program is for children aged 7 to 12 years of age, (or turning 7 this year) and runs from 9am to 3pm each day (drop off from 8.30am and pick up until 3.30pm).

Holistic Therapies at the NSCF Sunday Organic Farmers Market

Every week at the NSCF Sunday Organic Farmers Market from 6am to 11am you can find a range of fresh organic produce stalls, groceries and breakfast options. We also host an array of Holistic Health Services, from massage, tarot readings, or natural beauty treatments like eyebrow threading. The theme at the farm this month is #nourishingnovember and what is more nourishing than treating yourself to a Holistic Health or Beauty Service!

Green Smoothies

Green Smoothies are a locally produced by Sky Hunt. A Brisbane mum of two primary school age children, Sky spent 25 years as a personal trainer and was a competitive Bodybuilder and a University Judo Player. This meant she needed to understand what nutrition was required to perform at an elite level.

After studying the nutritional requirements needed for the body, Sky has developed her Green Smoothies which she freezes in order to capture the nutrition.

“Being a daily intake, anything less than organic will build up like residue in the body, so it is extremely important that my product is organic”, says Sky Hunt.

All Green Smoothies are blended not juiced, keeping in essential nutrients and fibre, before being frozen in recyclable pods. Sky only uses local seasonal organic produce in her Green Smoothies so the ingredients will vary from season to season. However, her organic blended Green Smoothies will have the following essential ingredients and nutrients:

Mint
Protein, Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Phosphorus and Zinc, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.

Kale
Vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin A, manganese, and copper; a very good source of vitamin B6, fiber, calcium, potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin B2; and a good source of iron, magnesium vitamin B1, omega-3 fats, phosphorus, protein, folate, and vitamin B3.

Baby Spinach
Vitamin K, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids), manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, copper, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin E, calcium, potassium and vitamin C. It is a very good source of dietary fiber, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, protein and choline.

Flat Leaf Parsley
Vitamin K and vitamin C as well as a good source of vitamin A, folate and iron. Parsley’s volatile oil components include myristicin, limonene, eugenol and alpha-thujene. Flavonoids include apiin, apigenin, crisoeriol and luteolin.

Lemon
Antioxidant with vitamin C, folate, potassium

Ginger
Vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, folate, riboflavin, niacin.

Spring ingredients include Mint, Kale, Purple Carrot, Baby Spinach, Pear, Flat Leaf Parsley, Celery, Hemp Seeds, Lemon, Sunflower Kernels, Wheatgrass and Ginger.

Green Smoothies are 100% organic, dairy free, nut free, preservative free, gluten free, egg free, with no added sugar. Boomerang Bags at the Markets

BOOMERANG BAGS IS A GRASSROOTS, COMMUNITY DRIVEN MOVEMENT TACKLING PLASTIC POLLUTION AT ITS SOURCE

Boomerang Bags work by getting fabric donations from the community and getting volunteers to sew the bags. What a great fun way to contribute to a sustainable world – create beautiful carry bags out of recycled materials!

In Australia, there are 860+ Boomerang Bag Communities, 205,603 + bags have been made, contributing to 62 000 + kilograms of waste diverted from landfill.

Boomerang Bags Chermside West Volunteer Group attend the Northey Street Organic Markets on the first Sunday of each month.

Bring some fabric donations and find out how to make your own bags or how to attend a sewing bee. Making bags together creates a platform to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use – one community, needle and thread at a time!

It’s through these grass roots community efforts for the environment that we can create a more sustainable society.

Boomerang Bags Chermside West Volunteer Group have created some great reusable Christmas gift ideas bags – give one to a loved one for Christmas or Boomerang Christmas Bags can also be used as reusable gift wrap!

Earth Kids Home School Program

Starting October 12th, this great 6 week program for home schooled kids, being held over six Friday mornings, is a great opportunity for kids to experience nature connection.

At the homeschool program, we will have spider expert Robert Whyte joining us. Robert is the co-author of ‘A Field Guide to Australian Spiders’. Last time he joined a program he had the Earth Kids collecting dozens of spiders, which he helped to identify. The children were very enthused about activity!

We will have Bill Lowah as a special guest presenter. Bill is a Torres Strait Islander who is on the farm’s First Nations Advisory Group. He is a wonderful story-teller, and we look forward to him sharing some of his culture and stories with the Earth Kids.

Our Earth Kids programs are about supporting kids to become ‘nature smart’ – to have the knowledge, understandings and skills to engage in creating a more sustainable world – in a fun and interactive way. They are experiential programs of outdoor discovery, in which children learn about the animals and plants at the Farm through observation and supported questioning; explore Indigenous knowledge; experiment with Earth Arts and bushcraft skills; and put permaculture into practice.

Each program differs according to the seasons and to include a diversity of activities. Along with the guest presenters we’ll also be doing shelter building, fire making, Earth arts, learning about birds and plants at the farm, and experiencing Earth connection practices and games.

We welcome volunteers on our Earth Kids programs. Non-parent volunteers are required to have a current blue card.
