Past First Nations Collaborative Work

Activities in the 2023-24 Financial Year

We were delighted to have a number of First Nations presenters involved with our education programs. In particular, Bruce Phillips from Murri Tukka started running bush foods workshops, taking over from farm founder Dick Copeman.

We held a session for farm staff led by Gamiliaroi woman Dominique Chen, in the lead up to the launch of the Growing on Country online course. This resource was designed by the team at Yuruwan to support anyone involved in growing food who wants to be an ally to First Nations people. We are again grateful for the grant that we received from Bank Australia to help kickstart this important project.

For the first time, our Winter Solstice Festival had a ‘Connect to Country’ stage, featuring an amazing group of First Nations presenters including Jacob Birch, Tanika Orr and Chris Jordan. We also started the festival with a powerful Welcome to Country from Derek Sandy, featured other amazing First Nations performers and continued the tradition of providing free tickets for First Nations people to the event and Dominique Chen was part of a panel discussion on permaculture education.

‘Remembering History, Celebrating First Nations Survival’ gathering for the farm community was held on Thursday January 25th, in acknowledgement of January 26th (Invasion Day / Survival Day).

We are grateful to our First Nations Advisory Group who helped guide the farm’s work over this period – Derek Sandy, Dameila Thompson, Dominique Chen and Jacob Birch.
