Northey Street City Farm offers a range of educational activities suitable for all age groups. These activities provide students with an opportunity to learn about permaculture practices and experience the life of an urban farm. They have also been designed to work across curriculum and fit a number of learning outcomes.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are taking additional safety and hygiene practices and we are staying up to date with any changes to Public Health Directions.
If you are not with a school group (including Out of School Hours Care), Group Tours are also available.
The Farm is the perfect “living classroom” for students to interact with our natural environment and learn practical ways in which to realise a more sustainable future. Investigate our fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, bush tucker area, recycling systems, chooks, worms and more!
Our talented and dynamic team of Farm Tutors includes classroom teachers, experienced sustainability workshop facilitators and advanced permaculture students and practitioners, all of whom possess Blue Cards (Working With Children Check). We love to share our passion for sustainability and learning!
Key areas for curriculum: Geography, Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts.
Choose from any of the following options:
BASIC FARM TOUR
Take an interactive guided tour through the food gardens, fruit orchard, recycling systems and enterprises of Northey Street City Farm.
Open for all ages.
Duration: 1.5hrs
Cost: $10 p/participant ($120 group minimum) GST inclusive
FARM LIFE
Worm farms, animals, herbs and vegetables and composting. Take a look into the life at the farm. Students participate in a number of activities, including:
- Take a sensory walk through food gardens
- Feed and care for chooks
- Learn about worm farms & composting
- Propagate plants or seeds
Grades: Prep – 10
Duration: 2hrs.
Cost: $12 p/participant ($160 minimum) GST inclusive
BIOMES AND FOOD SECURITY / FEEDING THE WORLD’S PEOPLE
Take a guided tour of the City Farm to see permaculture in action. Students learn how permaculture and sustainable agriculture can contribute to food security in a range of contexts and provide an important alternative to conventional agriculture.
Curriculum-linked worksheets and Education Kits for teachers are available for either the ‘Biomes and Food Security’ or ‘Feeding the World’s People’ Geography units.
Students also have a chance to partake in one of the following hands-on activities:
- Propagating plants
- Compost making
- Harvesting fruit and vegetables (seasonal)
Grades: 9 – 12
Duration: 2.5 hrs (shorter versions of this option are also available)
Cost: $16 p/participant ($180 minimum) GST inclusive
ECOARTS
This program is focused on learning how to be creative and express one’s innate artistic talents by using natural materials such as clay and natural pigments. This fun hands-on activity gives students the opportunity to make clay sculptures and create art with natural materials.
This activity can be added to any of the other options
Grades: Prep – Senior
Duration: variable 30mins – 1.5hrs
Cost: $6 per 1/2 hour per student (GST inclusive)
$150 minimum for a stand-alone 1.5 hour Ecoarts session
COB OVEN FARM COOKING (not currently available during the pandemic)
Students learn about seasonal planting, harvest vegetables from the gardens, prepare and cook them in the farm’s cob oven. The session finishes with communal pizza fresh from the oven. Students also discuss materials and techniques used in making a cob oven.
Grades: 4 – 12
Duration: 3hrs
Cost: $25 p/participant ($280 minimum) GST inclusive

As bookings are not paid until after each visit, there is no financial commitment to make a tentative booking.
To ensure arrangements can be made, a minimum advance notice of three weeks is usually sufficient.
We will contact you to confirm the details and booking.
You will be invoiced for the number of participants advised 2 working days before your visit.
