NSCF runs a farm school tour and hands on gardening and arts program with close to a 1000 school children taking part throughout the year. In 2011, the school garden program was successful in receiving a grant of $1,356.00 through the BCC Cultivating Community Gardens Grant 2010/2011 Program.
Obtaining the grant enabled the School SEED Garden Project to fund the necessary materials to help design and build the garden infrastructure. A hands on school garden program can now be formed that actively incorporates the garden and school curriculum into a fun, vibrant and engaging demonstration of sustainability.
The school SEED garden is located in the NE area of the farm and can be reached by walking through the SEED arbour into a garden surrounded by fruit trees. The garden is in its early stages and includes a combination of fruit trees; raised beds; no dig gardening; composting; companion planting; pest management; seed saving; chickens and water recycling. The garden aims to actively demonstrate how to reduce waste and grow fresh, healthy and affordable food. Children can experiment growing delicious edible fruit, vegetables and flowers based on inspiring sustainable environmental practices and principles. The undercover teaching area provides an additional, creative learning space. Environmental arts can also be weaved throughout the school SEED garden and is a great way for children visiting the garden to leave their mark.
Thank you to BCC Cultivating Community Gardens Grant Program and to all the people who have supported and volunteered their time and labour in the school garden throughout the years. We are looking forward to the school SEED garden being a happy, fun and colourful space throughout 2012 and beyond.
The school SEED garden is an ongoing project at the farm and just beginning to take shape. If you are interested in volunteering to work on the garden please phone the farm on (07) 3857 8775.
